Overview:
The Shore Temple , Mamallapuram is a historical temple located at Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, India. It is a structural temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Built in the 7th century AD during the rule of the Pallava dynasty, this temple is one of the oldest surviving stone temples of South India and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Shore temple , Mamallapuram is the most distinctive feature of the coastal town of Mahabalipuram. This ancient Hindu temple faces the Bay of Bengal and is made of granite blocks of various sizes, with two shrines facing east and one facing west. It has three distinct towers - two around the main shrine that sanctifies Lord Shiva, and one facing the sea which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Shore Temple was built by King Narasimhavarman II of the Pallava dynasty in the 7th century AD. It was originally a seaport and a trading centre during the Pallava period and the temples built here during this period depict the grandeur of their architecture and the magnificent sculptures. The temple was renovated in the 11th century and the grandest sculptures of that time can still be seen today.
