Brief History:
Jama Masjid, Bareilly is a historical mosque located in the western part of the city of Bareilly. It was built by Badr-Ud-Din Wali, a Prime Minister of Iftikhar Khan, the ruler of Rohilkhand in the 17th century. The mosque is a beautiful example of Mughal architecture and is equipped with four big minarets and three domes. The place serves as a bustling centre of Islamic culture and is visited by thousands of devotees throughout the year. The mosque also houses a madrasa which offers religious and educational programs. Architecture:
The Jama Masjid in Bareilly is a grandly constructed mosque with a large courtyard surrounded by arched cloister and galleries. The entrance to the mosque is an impressive open marble staircase and a large doorway decorated with intricate carvings. The main prayer hall of the mosque has seven arched openings with a two-storey domed roof covered with a decorative plaster. The inside walls and floors are adorned with floral motifs and verses of the holy Quran. The prayer hall is also accentuated by four minarets with conical tops. There are additional side-wings and large domed area behind the arches for bathing and ablutions. The mosque also features a large second courtyard that serves as a hub for social gathering of the local people. It is surrounded by a two-and-a-half storey arcade with pointed arches. In the central part of the courtyard is a cascading fountain for ablutions. There are additional two other arched galleries raising up the walls towards the roof. The entire structure is grand and symbolic of the Indian Islamic architecture. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
