Overview:
Fort and Cemetery, Pulicat is an important historic landmark located in the small fishing village of Pulicat along India’s Coromandel Coast. This colonial structure from the 16th century served as a Dutch trading post and also as a stronghold against Portuguese invaders. The fort and cemetery still stand today as a symbol of the Dutch presence in Tamil Nadu. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Fort and Cemetery, Pulicat is the remnants of the Dutch arrival in Tamil Nadu in 1609. The fort stands in fairly good condition and offers a glimpse into the culture and architecture of the time. The fort consists of a central square enclosure with four corner bastions and a gateway. Inside, there are several small buildings which housed troops, warehouses, and administrative offices. Outside the fort, a cemetery is located, with graves of several Dutch soldiers as well as locals who died during the rule of the fort.
