Overview:
garh fort is an ancient fort located in Rohtas district of Bihar, India. It is situated in the foothills of Kaimur Range at a distance of 24 km from Sasaram railway station. This fort is believed to have been built in the 6th century A.D. by Raja Harishchandra, a Chandel dynasty emperor. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Rohtasgarh fort is known for its massive city walls and bastions, surrounded by a deep moat. It has 7 gates and a number of temples, resorts and watchtowers scattered throughout the fort, which add to its allure. The main attraction of the fort is its grand palace and rock-cut caves. Rohtasgarh fort has a rich history and numerous battles have been fought here throughout its history. It was originally built as a stronghold by the kings of Rajgir who defeated the evil ruler Bakhtiasur. Later, in the 16th century, the fort was captured by the Islamic rulers Sher Shah Suri and it was renamed 'Rohtasgarh' after him. During the Mughal period, the fort was further developed and used as a military base.
