Brief History:
: Jama Masjid is a 17th century mosque located in Aurangabad, India. This majestic mosque was constructed by the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in 1688–89 and remains one of the most famous monuments in the city. It is an impressive structure with a grand entrance flanked by impressive arches and a spacious courtyard that can hold thousands of worshippers. The mosque also boasts a huge covered gallery, four octagonal minarets, and five domes covered in white marble. The walls of the masjid are adorned with intricate floral and geometric designs, as well as verses from the Qur’an. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Jama Masjid of Aurangabad, India is a fine example of Islamic architecture built during Aurangzeb’s reign (1658-1707) in the Mughal period. This two-storey masjid is built of lime and stone and has a sprawling rectangular courtyard. The large open courtyard is enclosed by a colonnaded verandah of arches and a pillared hall in the center. The verandah has eleven high arches, some decorated with curved and radiating patterned masonry. The corner arches are stalactite work with ornamented parapet. The entrance doors are carved with Islamic motifs and the corners are decorated lattices. The silent prayers area is in the second storey and has a giant dome and three smaller domes on top. The entire masjid is embellished with lotus medallions and kanguras (miniature Islamic designs). The stand-alone mosque also has a minaret that rises from one corner of the courtyard.The masjid also features a well-preserved fresco which shows lively figurative paintings and floral designs in red, yellow, and green inlaid with gold. The interior of the central hall has Islamic religious script and auricular design that makes it look aesthetic and adds an alluring charm.
