Church and Convent of St. Francis Assisi Overview The Church and Convent of St. Francis Assisi is a monumental Franciscan complex in Assisi, Italy, built in 1228 to commemorate and house the remains of Saint Francis of Assisi. The complex is composed of several buildings, including the Lower and Upper Basilicas, the Porziuncola chapel and the St. Mary of the Angels Basilica. The complex underwent renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in 2000, the Church and Convent of St. Francis Assisi was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
