Somanathaswamy Temple Overview Somanathaswamy Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Tamil Nadu, India. History Somanathaswamy Temple was built around 1,200 years ago and is believed to have been constructed by two Cholas rulers – Aditya Chola I and Vijayabahu I. The temple was initially built as a small shrine, but over the years has been expanded to its present-day proportions. Interesting facts Somanathaswamy Temple is believed to be the second oldest temple of the god Shiva in India as it was constructed before the temple at Rameswaram. The temple is also considered to be one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, which are holy sites that are dedicated to aspects of divine female energy.
