Believed to have been built during the 12th century, this temple is considered one of the finest examples of Hoysala architecture. The temple's main shrine houses a 4.5-meter tall black stone statue of Shiva, considered to be the largest of the kind in South India. The temple consists of two shrines, one of Lord Shiva and the other of his consort Parvati, and it is surrounded by a number of smaller shrines dedicated to other Hindu gods and goddesses. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is known for its ornate carvings and sculptures, featuring intricate designs and intricate motifs. The carvings in the temple range from scenes depicting Hindu myths, Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, and stories about Shiva, Vishnu and other deities. The history of the Harihareswara Temple dates back to the Hoysala Empire. The temple was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1121 AD and was completed in 1160 AD.
