and more Subramanya Temple, Vallimalai Overview The Subramanya Temple in Vallimalai, India is situated at the foothills of Palamalai hills in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is said to be one of the most ancient Murugan temples in the world, with a history of more than 1000 years. The presiding deity of this temple is Subramanya, another name of Lord Murugan, believed to be the commander of the divine forces, the son of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Prominent Features Apart from the primary deity, the temple’s prominent features include seven Mahadwaras, three Praharas, two huge mandapas and two deepasthalas (Deepams). These features display a typical Chola architecture from the 6th – 8th Century. Here, the people of Hindu faith bring offering to the deity to seek blessings for health, wealth and prosperity. History The exact origin of this temple is unknown, but it is estimated to have been built by the Chola kings around 1000 years ago. In 1702 AD, this temple was renovated by the then ruling Pandyan kings. Later in 1876 AD, a mahadwara was added and it is believed to have been built by Serfoji II of the Maratha Empire.
