Located at a distance of 25 km west of Tumakuru, Haliyangadi is an ancient settlement which was once a major trading port. Today, the town offers a glimpse into its ancient heritage as well as an interesting mix of temples and monuments. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent feature of Haliyangadi is its ancient fort, built by the Chalukyas in the 11th century. This fort is surrounded by a massive moat and is considered to be one of the oldest surviving Hindu monuments in Karnataka. There are several temples and monuments scattered around the town, including the Shankaralingeswara Temple, the Bhavani Amman Temple, the Cholamandala Palace, and the Veera Narasimha Temple. Haliyangadi was originally known to be a bustling port city on the banks of the Tunga River. It was an important trading port during the rule of the Cholas, who built its massive fort. Later, in the 16th century, the fort was expanded and renovated by the Vijayanagara rulers. The town also served as the strategic base for the Marathas during the Third Anglo-Maratha War.
