Athirala Parasurama Temple Overview The Athirala Parasurama Temple is one of the most ancient and renowned temples located in the district of Trichy, Tamil Nadu. It is one of the 108 Divya Desam temples in the country and was built in 9th century CE. This temple also hosts a religious festival, called Sankranti, which is celebrated every month on the 1st of the Tamil calendar. Prominent Features The main deity of this temple is Lord Parasurama, and the temple also houses other deities, such as Lord Ganapathy, Agasthiyar, and Navagrahas. This temple is dedicated to Lord Parasurama and the interior of the temple is adorned with beautiful and intricate sculptures. The temple’s architecture is outstanding, with majestic pillars and carved figures, and the sanctum sanctorum is decorated with decorative pillars and paintings. This temple also has a big pond near it, believed to have been created by Lord Parasurama and hence, a dip in it is considered holy. History The history of the Athirala Parasurama Temple is related to the story of Parasurama, a Hindu avatar. Legend has it that Lord Parasurama, son of sage Jamadagni and Renuka, got the title of 'Parasurama' because while in meditation, he asked Lord Shiva to grant him an axe (parasu) to clear the sea and restore withheld land. He used his axe to slice off a piece of the sea to create Kerala. As such, the temple celebrates his greatness and devotion to Lord Shiva. Interesting Facts The Athirala Parasurama Temple has a unique architectural design, as it consists of two parts- the main temple and the agricultural section, which was added by the British after the temple was destroyed and looted a few centuries ago. This is the only temple in India that has an agricultural section. The temple also houses some beautiful, ancient sculptures and idols of saints, along with stone-carved images of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and other Gods. It is an important pilgrimage place and is visited by hundreds of devotees every year.
