Madan Kamdev is a 9th-century Hindu temple complex located in Madan Kamdev, India. It is situated in the Purba Kamrup district of Assam, and is believed to be the most important site of the Archaeological Survey of India. Overview:

Madan Kamdev is said to be a place of one of the earliest Varaha shrines, believed to be in existence since 900 CE. The temple complex consists of many small and large temples, among which the main temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the oldest. It is also known as Madan Kamraj or Madan Kamakhya, being associated with the Hindu god Shiva, who is worshiped here as the destroyer of ignorance. The temple complex also houses a monastery, residential units, and a number of other smaller temples and shrines. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.

History:

The most prominent feature of this temple complex is its main temple, known as the Madan Kamdev temple. This temple is said to be one of the oldest existing temples of Assam, and is believed to be in existence since 900 CE. This temple has been constructed using laterite stones and has a garbagriha (sanctum) as well as a mandapa. The sanctum houses a Shiva Lingam and images of Goddesses Uma and Parvati. This temple also has stone carvings of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu and many images of Shiva’s ganas, attendants and other gods and goddesses.
