St. Jacob’s Church was founded in 1768 by a small African-American congregation who moved to Washington, D.C. from Prince Georges County, Maryland. Its history goes back to the original purchase of land in 1798 to build the original building. In 1860, the church was reconstructed and renamed St. Jacob’s.
