The Franciscan Monastery and Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a monastery in Jerusalem that was established by the Franciscan Order in 1572. The monastery is located in a building that was built on the site believed to have been the home of the Virgin Mary. The monastery is dedicated to the Annunciation, when the Archangel Gabriel visited Mary to announce that she was carrying the baby Jesus. The monastery features a walk-in grotto where visitors can walk along an underground path, lined with 11 sandstone sculptures depicting scenes from the life of Mary as told in the Gospels. The walk ends in the heart of the grotto, where visitors can admire a large statue of the Virgin Mary. Above street level, the monastery includes a beautiful Gothic-style church that was built in 1884. The church has undergone extensive renovations and can now seat up to 600 people. The Franciscan Monastery also houses a museum with artifacts dating back to the 4th century. The museum displays a number of items related to the life of Mary and Jesus, as well as books and manuscripts and other items related to Christianity. The Franciscan Monastery also offers a range of services, such as Mass, spiritual direction, and retreats. The monastery grounds are also a popular attraction with visitors, as they are full of gardens and olive groves, providing a tranquil setting for a stroll or a moment of reflection. The monastery is open to the public, and guided tours are available.
