The first services at St. George's were held in 1789, when the congregation worshipped in a temporary wooden structure. The cathedral-like building that stands today replaced the old one in 1808. The original building was set on fire and destroyed by the British in 1814 during the invasion of Washington. St. George's was named an Episcopal Cathedral in 1895, but lost that status in 1922. St. George's is the largest church in Alexandria and has a seating capacity of 1,200. It is home to a 15-stop pipe organ with 2,082 pipes, one of the largest organs in the Washington area, and is the only pipe organ to have been fully restored to the way it looked when the church was first built.
