History:

In the early 1870s, the area around the now St. Anthony's Church was largely rural with very few families living there. Seeing the need for a stronger Catholic presence in the area, Bishop Jean Marie Odin of Galveston, Texas purchased two blocks of land at the current site of St. Anthony's Church and appointed Fr. Theodore Benedict Huben as the first pastor. Work was begun on the first frame building in 1876 and was completed the following year. Over the next few years, improvements were made to the church, including the installation of stained glass windows, two steeples, and a belfry.
