History:

Mactaquac Provincial Park is located along the Saint John River, approximately 15 km west of Fredericton, New Brunswick, in Canada. Created by the Canadian government in 1962, Mactaquac Provincial Park was the first large-scale hydro electric generating facility on the Saint John River. The original hydro project began in 1953 when the province began a feasibility study to examine the potential for establishing a hydro-electric power station at Mactaquac. In 1956, an agreement was signed between the province, NB Power and Algonquin Power Company for the construction of a dam and powerhouse. Construction of the dam and powerhouse began in 1960 and was proceded by the clearance of over 2,100 homes and the creation of new infrastructure to support the growing local communities. After the completion of the Mactaquac Dam and the establishment of the Mactaquac generating station in 1968, the provincial government set aside the land that was once planned to be flooded by the rising waters of the Saint John River and declared it as Mactaquac Provincial Park. Since its conception, Mactaquac Provincial Park has become one of New Brunswick’s most popular outdoor recreation sites, attracting over 300,000 visitors annually. In addition to an array of camping, fishing, boating, and swimming activities, Mactaquac is home to a variety of wildlife and natural attractions, including a nearby Columbia Lake Beach, the Mactaquac Golf Course, the Historic Mactaquac Dam, and the Mactaquac Provincial Fish Hatchery. The park is also the site of one of the country’s first permanent maps of Canada’s landscape, which served as a tourism guide and a teaching tool for over two decades.
