History:

The Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology is located in Drumheller, Alberta, Canada. It is considered one of the world’s leading research and educational centres for the study of palaeontology and the history of life on Earth. The museum opened in mid-1985 and is a branch of the Royal Ontario Museum. The history of the museum dates back to the early 1900s, when Royal Ontario Museum geologist Joseph Tyrrell discovered the first fossil skeleton of the Albertosaurus sarcophagus in the valley of the Red Deer River. Tyrrell brought the bones to the Royal Ontario Museum, where they were pieced together to form the world’s first Albertosaurus skeleton. The Museum was first opened at the University of Alberta in 1951 as the Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology. The museum later moved to its permanent home in Drumheller as the Royal Tyrrell Museum in mid-1985. Here, visitors may explore the Cretaceous World, the area of geological time when dinosaurs lived, and travel through the earliest history of the Alberta badlands. From the fossil record, visitors may learn about animal and plant life, how they adapted to their environment, and how the earth changed during this time.
