The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography (CMCP) was an Ottawa-based national public photographic museum dedicated to collecting, understanding, and exhibiting the art of photography from 1940 to the present. Founded in 1985 as the National Photography Canada collection, it opened in 1988 as a permanent photographic exhibition within the National Gallery of Canada. The CMCP evolved to become one of the most respected and influential photographic museums in North America. Its collection grew to over 11,000 photographs and related materials, and its exhibitions, publications, and programs fostered the appreciation and understanding of contemporary art photography in Canada and abroad. In 2006, the CMCP was closed due to budget cuts. The CMCP collection was transferred to Library and Archives Canada in 2007 where it continues to be studied and enjoyed by researchers from all over the world.
