History:

Casa Loma is a Gothic Revival style house and gardens in midtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that is now a landmark and major tourist attraction. It was built as a residence for financier Sir Henry Mill Pellatt. Construction began in 1911 and was completed in 1914. The cost of construction was $3.5 million, equivalent to over $73 million in 2020. The architect was E.J. Lennox, who based the house’s design on several European castles he had studied. The house features 5 floors, 98 rooms, secret passages, and a winding tunnel. It is full of artwork, antiques, classical furniture, and stonework. The house had all modern conveniences including electricity, an indoor pool, and an elevator. In 1923, Sir Henry could no longer afford the upkeep and taxes associated with the property. He defaulted on a Royal Bank of Canada loan and was forced to sell the house. The house then changed hands several times, and eventually became a hotel and tourist attraction. During World War II, the Royal Canadian Air Force used the house for military training. It was then used for films and television shows. Today, the house is owned by the City of Toronto and is open seven days a week as a tourist attraction and museum. It is one of the city’s most popular attractions.
