The Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) is a major public art museum located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was founded in 1900 and has since grown to become one of the largest museums in North America and one of the most significant visual arts and cultural institutions in Toronto. The roots of the AGO can be traced back to the creation of the Art Museum of Toronto in 1900 by a group of private citizens interested in promoting a vibrant artistic community. A donation by local businessman Benjamin Green in 1910 enabled the facility to open in its first home, a building on Dundas Street West which is now the location of the YMCA. In 1911, the newly established Art Gallery of Toronto moved to The Grange, a historic Georgian mansion and estate. The building, which still stands today, served as the gallery's home for nearly sixty years. As a result of the increasing popularity of the art museum, the site rapidly exceeded its capacity, leading to a move in 1974 to a new building designed by architect Frank Gehry in the city’s downtown core. The AGO was among the first galleries in North America to display both old and contemporary works of art.
