West Edmonton Mall, in Edmonton, Alberta is the world's largest shopping mall, with a gross leasing area of 8.1 million square feet. It opened on 15 September 1981 with 800,000 square feet of space and has since seen several phases of expansion. The mall began construction in 1969, and opened its doors on the west side of Edmonton in 1981. It was an instant hit, attracting some 24 million visitors in its first year and more than doubling Edmonton’s population of some 400,000. Since then, West Edmonton Mall’s owners have continually invested in improvement to the facility, adding more than 3.5 million square feet in expansions since 1981. The original mall included four anchor stores (Sears, The Bay, Eaton's, and Woodward's), six cinemas, and more than 150 specialty shops. In 1992, the mall reached its first major milestone by opening the world’s largest indoor waterpark. The next year, an ice rink, a shooting range, two mini golf courses, and a music store were added to help draw even more visitors.
