History:

Gastown, named in honor of 'Gassy' Jack Deighton, is an area of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada that is steeped in history and culture. It is one of the earliest settlements in the city and is now a National Historic Site of Canada. The area was initially settled by “Gassy” Jack Deighton, an Englishman from Yorkshire who arrived in Vancouver in 1867. He set up a saloon in the area, which became the centre of the settlement, and the settlement itself came to be known as Gastown. Jack Deighton's saloon was one of the many centres of activity in the area, in which the waterfront, sawmills, warehouses, and other local businesses fed Vancouver's early history. By the end of the 19th century, more settlers arrived in Gastown, bringing about the construction of a telegraph line, the first electric trolley, and the first brick street -Water Street. The settlement was also home to many inns, merchants, artisans, and other entrepreneurs. By the early 1900s, Gastown had become part of the modern city of Vancouver and had become one of the city's most popular entertainment districts. It was home to a great many bars and pubs, as well as the famous Gastown Steam Clock, and the many antique shops, restaurants, and stores that were located there soon made it a popular destination for both locals and tourists alike.
