Cabot Tower, a 29.5 metre stone Victorian turret tower, is located on top of Signal Hill in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Built in 1897 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's famous voyage to the New World, it has become a symbol of St. John’s. The idea to build the tower was first proposed by Prime Minister Sir Robert Borden and was strongly supported by the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, Sir William Whiteway. The cornerstone was laid by the Governor of Newfoundland, Sir Herbert Murray, on June 24, 1897. The construction of the tower, designed by architect William Howe Greene, was supervised by C.A. Pippy and was paid for by public subscription. The tower used local granite quarried from the Fogo Islands and was completed in 1901. The bell and clock were added in 1905. Cabot Tower was originally used as a naval and military signal station but was damaged by a blizzard in 1941 and was closed for seven years. In 1948, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador restored it and continued use of the building as a signal station until 1964. Today, the tower is a popular attraction for tourists and is a beautiful spot to take in views of the city and harbour.
