History:

Château Laurier is a hotel located in Ottawa, Ontario on the banks of the Rideau Canal. It has been a landmarkdestination in Ottawa since its opening in 1912. The Château Laurier was constructed following a design by Canadian architect John Pearson at a cost of $2 million. Construction of the hotel was commissioned by Grand Trunk Railway president Charles Melville Hays and was named after former Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Hays requested that the hotel resemble France’s famous Château Frontenac in Quebec City, and the site chosen was the former location of a mansion owned by Mary Harris, the wife of lumber baron J.R. Booth. The Château Laurier was officially opened to the public on June 1, 1912. Once completed, it was one of the most luxurious hotels in Canada and quickly became the centre and social hub for the city of Ottawa. During the next four decades, the hotel hosted countless notable figures, including members of the British Royal family, dignitaries from across Canada, and Hollywood actors and entertainers. In 1966, the Château Laurier was sold to the Eaton Corporation, who began renovations and additions to the hotel. During this time, the East and West Towers were built, nearly doubling the size of the original structure.
