The Royal British Columbia Museum located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada was established in 1886, making it the oldest provincial museum in Canada. The Museum’s founding was done largely through public subscription and support, and the building, known as the Provincial Museum and National History Site of Canada, opened to the public in 1895. The museum’s first Curator, Dr. Israel Wood Powell, had been collecting artifacts since 1875. He was passionate about protecting and showcasing the province’s natural history, anthropology, ethnology and archaeology. It quickly became an internationally renowned collection, with interest from around the world. In 1903, King Edward VII granted the provincial museum the “Royal” designation, and it has been known as the Royal BC Museum (RBCM) ever since. During the first half of the twentieth century, the museum continued to grow, with a special reverence for First Nations artifacts that was unparalleled in the region. To this day, the museum is considered a leader in the field of Aboriginal Peoples research and collections management. In 1966, the government of British Columbia began calling for a new museum complex to accommodate its growing collections. The current museum premises was built between 1979 and 1986, and opened to the public in the spring of 1986.
