History:
The Shaw Festival, a professional theatre festival located in the picturesque town of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, was founded in 1962 by theater director and producer Brian Doherty. After a successful first season, it was decided that the festival would be expanded to a ten-week season that was dedicated to featuring plays by George Bernard Shaw and other authors from Shaw’s era. For the next few decades, the Shaw Festival continued to be an important hub for actors, directors, and designers from across Canada and around the world who wanted to celebrate and experience Shaw’s works. In the 1980s, the Shaw Festival began to diversify its offerings. Plays by authors such as Ibsen, Chekhov, and Molière were featured in addition to Shaw’s works. The theatre adopted a commitment to devise and create new plays, as well as re-imagine classics, which resulted in a bigger, more expansive program. Throughout the late 1990s and into the early 2000s, the Shaw Festival expanded further, building more stages and increasing its theatrical programming. After a disastrous 2008 season, the festival mounted the most ambitious season in its history, which included eleven plays and two musicals, marking the festival’s 50th anniversary. Today, the Shaw Festival has seen increasing success, drawing in more and more audiences each year and garnering critical acclaim. With its ongoing commitment to present classic and modern plays in the heart of Niagara-on-the-Lake, the festival is an important cultural centre of Canadian theatre.
