History:

Maligne Lake, located in Jasper National Park in Alberta, Canada, is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The lake’s history is intertwined with the region’s Indigenous people, the Atsina. The Atsina used Maligne Lake as a stopping point during their annual migrations from the western part of the park to the east. The first European to visit the lake was Father-Albert Lacombe in 1909. He spotted the lake while travelling with the Cree who had a long-standing relationship with the Atsina. Lacombe dubbed the lake ‘Maligne’, a French adjective meaning ‘ill-tempered’ due to the lake’s turbulent waters. In the 1930’s, a major tourist development project for Maligne Lake was proposed by Mount Robson Parks, a joint venture between the Canadian National Railway and the Alberta government. The plan was to connect the lake by railway to the rest of Jasper National Park. Construction began in 1934, and by 1938, more than 13 kilometres of railway tracks had been built. Though the plan for the railway was halted during World War II due to a shortage of supplies, much of the infrastructure built during this period still remains. In 1948, another road proposal was put forward, and Maligne Lake road was completed in 1962. The road project was criticised for adversely impacting Indigenous use of the area, but has seen a resurgence in popularity over the years as a way to access the lake. In January of 2000, Maligne Lake was added to the list of Canadian Heritage Rivers, recognizing it as a natural and historic treasure.
