The Legislative Assembly of Alberta, located in Edmonton, Alberta, is the unicameral legislature of the Canadian province of Alberta. Established in 1905, it has been in continuous operation since provincial government was created in Alberta. The first election for the Legislative Assembly of Alberta took place on July 20, 1905, with the election of 19 members. The assembly was originally composed of 24 members, with six members representing the electoral divisions of Calgary and Alberta, the remaining 18 representing the two districts of Strathcona and Edmonton. In 1909, the majority of the members were from rural areas, while a few were from the urban centres of Edmonton and Calgary. In 1921, the members of the assembly were irresolutely divided between those who supported the policy of William Aberhart and his Social Credit Movement and those who opposed it. In 1935, the assembly adopted a strong opposition stance to the United Farmers of Alberta government’s policy of diversifying areas of agricultural production. In 1971, the assembly passed a historic bill known as the Alberta Bill of Rights, a groundbreaking human rights document. The act proscribed certain activities by the Government of Alberta, including, for example, job discrimination on the basis of race, ancestry, colour, age, or sex. In April of 1982, the first Female Premier was appointed. Premier Don Getty appointed Alberta’s first female premier, Nancy Betkowski. She had been a member of the Legislative Assembly since 1979 and was sworn in as the 11th Premier of Alberta. In 2015, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta was declared an Alberta Historic Resource. This was the first time an existing legislative building in Alberta was given such a designation. In 2018, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta celebrated its 113th continuous session, making it one of the longest continuously operating legislative assemblies in North America. Currently, the Legislative Assembly of Alberta is composed of 87 members, representing the province’s 87 electoral districts. The members of the assembly are all elected in general provincial elections held every four years. The current Premier of Alberta is Jason Kenney, who is a member of the United Conservative Party.
