The winning design, submitted byMitchell/Giurgola Architects, was chosen for its modern simplicity and overall harmony with the surrounding landscape. Additionally, the design was intended to link with Canberra’s surrounds and to reflect the nation’s values. The architecture of Parliament House incorporates the use of glass, sandstone and native grasses. It incorporates three major blocks artificially landscaped to merge with the surrounding bushland and a terraced hillside. Inside, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks overlook the walls of the chamber and the Great Hall. As the primary home of Australia's federal parliament, Parliament House houses the Senate and House of Representatives.
