History:

Peggy's Cove Lighthouse, located on the eastern shore of St. Margaret's Bay in Nova Scotia, is likely the most recognized Canadian lighthouse in the world. It stands today as an iconic symbol of Nova Scotia’s identity and its seafaring culture. The iconic light station was first built in 1868, several decades after settlers first arrived to the cove. The first lighthouse was a conical cast iron tower with brick lining standing 26 feet tall, topped with a light at the 138-foot mark. A metal fog horn was added in 1885 and it was eventually replaced in 1915. In 1914, a devastating fire destroyed the entire keeper's dwelling, causing significant damage to the tower. It was rebuilt in 1915 using a different material; concrete lined with brick. To enhance the visibility of beacon, the cast iron tower was replaced with a village-style lighthouse. Both the keeper's dwelling and tower still remain today, and the light, fog horn, and other structures were declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 1999. Today the lighthouse is still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard, and guided tours are available for visitors during the summer months. The Peggy's Cove Preservation Area, including the lighthouse, was declared a protected area in 1985 to preserve its historic and picturesque coastline, and is one of Nova Scotia’s most popular tourist attractions.
