Dufferin Terrace is a public park situated along the St. Lawrence River in the city of Quebec, Canada, direct from the Chateau Frontenac and the Citadelle of Quebec. The terrace first opened in 1838 and has been a major part of tourism in Quebec City for nearly two centuries. The Dufferin Terrace was built to recall the triumphal arches of European capitals. It was designed and built by Charles Baillairgé, a famous Quebec City architect and engineer. The terrace was named after then Governor-General of Canada, Lord Dufferin. The design for the terrace was inspired by Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe in Paris. The terrace was built with large stones that form a wide platform that looks out over the St. Lawrence River. The terrace has a rich history, having been visited by several historic world figures, including Charlemagne, the Masonic Order (who also had a Lodge here), Queen Victoria, and the future King Edward VII. The terrace saw additional construction in 1895 when the Train Station was built.
