History:

CFB Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, was a major Canadian Forces Base from 1942 to 2020. It was generally referred to as "the home of the midnight sun" due to its northern latitude and 24-hour sunlight during the summer months. The base provided logistical and operational support for Canadian military aircraft throughout Europe and the Middle East for more than 70 years. At the start of WWII, the Canadian government quickly realized they needed a major airbase to support their forces in Europe. Gander was chosen as the site for the new base and work began in 1941. CFB Gander was officially opened in 1942. The base was initially built to support the delivery of supplies and equipment to England via the trans-Atlantic ferry route. It quickly grew to become one of the most important airbases in the British Commonwealth. The base was home to a variety of different aircraft, including the Avro Lancaster, the Hawker Hurricane, the Westland Lysander and the Spitfire. In addition, its strategic location in the Atlantic was vital in ferrying aircraft from the United States and South America to military bases in Europe. During the Cold War, CFB Gander served as a major air hub for airspace surveillance over the North Atlantic. The base was also used to airlift personnel, materiel and supplies to NATO forces in Europe and the Middle East. It served as a major refueling hub during the 1991 Gulf War, leading to it being nicknamed the "Crossroads of the World". In the 2000s, CFB Gander’s role shifted from operational airbase to regional support base. In 2019, the Department of National Defence announced the closure of the base, as it was determined that the base was no longer necessary nor cost effective.
