The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site (or simply known as the "Halifax Citadel") is a star-shaped fort located in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. Built in the early 1800s, it was initially the headquarters of the Halifax Garrison and, until World War II, served as a regional defensive fortress and military base. The Citadel was constructed on the existing site of a Mi’kmaq village, which was the site of a French fort during the mid-1700s. Construction of the Citadel began in early 1812 and was completed in June 1856. The Citadel was used as a source of defense from potential British attack during the The War of 1812. Located on Citadel Hill overlooking the The Halifax harbour, the Citadel offered a strategic view of the city's harbor and channel allowing its garrison to protect the harbor entrance from enemy attack.
