History:
Grouse Mountain, located in North Vancouver, British Columbia, has a long and vibrant history. The mountain was originally known as 'Yale' or 'Yale Peak' and first sighted by Europeans in 1792 when Spanish explorer Dionisio Alcalá Galiano described it in his diary. In 1894, Seymour Creek near Grouse Mountain was selected as the site for one of Vancouver's first sources of energy. The Seymour Creek Dam was built and soon after, a timber mill opened on the north slopes of the mountain. By the early 1900s, Grouse Mountain was becoming a popular destination for both tourists and locals in search of outdoor recreation and escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. By 1925, a road was constructed to the peak of Grouse Mountain and two chairlifts were added in 1926 to further enhance the mountain's appeal. The first commercial ski area was established in 1928, and Grouse Mountain's popularity began to really take off. During World War II, Grouse Mountain served as an area where the war was publically discussed and debated as well as a compulsory military training ground. In the 1960s, further improvements and upgrades were made to Grouse Mountain's ski area, and more ski runs were added, significantly increasing the areas appeal. The peak was also selected as the site of one of the two major ski jump venues for the 1988 Winter Olympics. In recent years, Grouse Mountain has become a top tourist attraction in North Vancouver. Thousands of visitors come every year to enjoy activities such as skiing, snowboarding, zip lining, snowshoeing, and more.
