The Forks has been a meeting place for over six thousand years. The area was first inhabited by indigenous peoples, including the Assiniboine, Cree, Ojibway, Sioux, and Dakota. Europeans began arriving in the area in the late 1700s. The area became a prime fur trading post, with The Hudson Bay Company and The North West Company setting up posts at The Forks. The first modern community at The Forks was established in 1874. The Winnipeg and Pacific Railway line put The Forks on the map as a major hub for trade, shipping, and commerce. In 1889, a consortium of wealthy Winnipeg business leaders invested in the first steamboats and partnered with the Winnipeg and Pacific Railway to form the Fort Garry Navigation Company, making The Forks a port city of sorts.
