History:

The history of Victoria Park in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, dates back to the early 19th century. In 1815, the British Government and the Province of Prince Edward Island purchased 200 acres of land from Governor Edmund Fanning for use as a public park. As early as 1818, the park had been developed with a central oval featuring trees and shrubs, a fountain in the middle, and surrounding pathways. In 1890, a bandstand was built around the fountain. The early park was known as Queen’s Square, as it was named after Queen Victoria who visited in 1860. However, it was later renamed Victoria Park in her honour. Throughout much of the twentieth century, Victoria Park was the site of many special events including concerts, sports tournaments and other diversified activities. Recent additions to the park have included a children’s playground, memorials to local First World War veterans, a crafts market, and a performance pavilion. Every weekend in July, downtown Charlottetown hosts the free annual Victoria Park Summertime Festival. The park is also the location of Canada's longest-running farmers' market which has been held here since 1789. Victoria Park remains an important fixture in Charlottetown due to its vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere.
