History:

The Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) is an annual fair held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It has been an important part of the city's culture since its founding on August 11, 1910. The PNE was founded by the Greater Vancouver Exhibition Association and has evolved over the years to become a major North American attraction. The fair began as a showcase for agricultural and industrial products. Exhibitions included livestock shows, displays of machinery, technology demonstrations, and exhibits of the region’s arts and crafts. The PNE grew rapidly, leading to an attendance of over a million visitors by 1911. In 1912, the PNE added a midway with rides and games, and the first games booths. The fair also began hosting the world-famous Tillicum Village War Canoe Races, a festive event featuring watercrafts racing around the pond in front of the fairground’s grandstand. During the first half of the twentieth century, the fair continued to grow in popularity, attracting acts like the world’s first flying trapeze artist, “Zazel” and acts like magician Harry Houdini. In the 1940s, the fair added the Garden Auditorium, a large indoor venue used for concerts, trade shows, and other events. In 1956, the PNE began a period of significant change when it was taken over by the government of British Columbia. In the 1960s, the PNE introduced the first ever “western theme park,” Playland, which included a roller coaster, a log ride, and other rides and attractions. The Playland of today is even more expanded, with more than forty rides, a miniature golf course, and an arcade. The PNE hosts a number of other events throughout the year, including the Canadian National Exhibition which takes place in August. It also hosts entertainment-based events such as the Pacific Amphitheatre, which was added in 2008, as well as the PNE Fright Night, a horror movie-theme event in October. Today, the Pacific National Exhibition continues to bring people together in order to celebrate its long-standing tradition of “cultural, agricultural, sporting, industrial and educational events, exhibits and entertainment” that have made it one of the most important cultural events in Vancouver and Canada. It attracts more than one million visitors every year, making it one of the city’s most popular attractions. You must visit one of these historical places in Canada on your Canada tour
