History:
Alexander Keith's Brewery was founded in 1820 by Alexander Keith in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At the time, Halifax was a developing British port city in the Maritime Provinces. The brewery marketed itself as producing "Fine Malt Liquors of Superior Quality". The Keith's Brewery quickly became a success in Halifax and soon expanded its operations to other areas of Maritime Canada and the Northeastern United States. The company continued to grow and diversify, until in 1867, when control of the company was handed over to Alexander Keith's sons, John and George. John and George Keith maintained strong relations with beer-drinking communities in Halifax and other areas of Maritime Canada. They expanded the brewery's presence and opened new sales and distribution centers. The brewery also sponsored many civic activities, including the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo, a popular summer event. The Keith's Brewery experienced tremendous success and growth in the years following World War II. By the early 1950s, the company was producing over one million barrels of beer a year and had become one of the largest breweries in Canada. In 1961, the Keith's name was officially changed to Alexander Keith's. Despite its success, the brewery was sold to Olands in 1971, which continued to produce Alexander Keith's beer. In 2006, Labatt Breweries of Canada purchased Olands and took over the production of Alexander Keith's. In 2011, Labatt opened a new brewery in Halifax for the production of Alexander Keith's beer. The company still sponsors various events in the Haligonian community and is a mainstay of Maritime culture. You must visit one of these historical places in Canada on your Canada tour
