Located in downtown Ottawa, the Hill has been the home of Canada's federal government since 1867, when Queen Victoria chose Ottawa as the capital of Canada. It is where members of the House of Commons and the Senate meet to debate, pass, and amend laws, and where the official residence of the Governor General is located. The complex includes Parliament Buildings, the Peace Tower, and the Library of Parliament, and is also surrounded by the Rideau Canal and various memorials. The Parliament Building is composed of four Gothic Revival buildings, with the Centre Block being the most recognizable. It is the focus of the parliamentary precinct and home to the House of Commons and the Senate Chamber, as well as the grand and ornate office of the Prime Minister. The building was destroyed by a fire in 1916, and was rebuilt in 1920 in the same grand and decorative gothic style.
