History:

Granville Island is a vibrant urban oasis and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Vancouver, British Columbia. Located in False Creek, the island is actually a man-made peninsula, and contains many public attractions such as businesses, arts, cultural venues, and a lovely waterfront. Over the years, the island has gone through a remarkable transformation, rising from its industrial beginnings to a vibrant hub of mixed-use development and attractions. The history of Granville Island can be traced back to the late 1800s when it was first developed as an industrial area. At this time, the island was mostly occupied by commercial and industrial endeavours such as boat works, warehouses and grain silos. During the first half of the 20th century, the False Creek area suffered from the effects of industrial pollution from the industries on the island. In the late 1960s a visionary urban planner, Arthur Erickson, proposed a plan to convert the area into an urban park. This plan was rejected due to growing concerns of industry pollution, but in 1972 the federal government bought the island and started the clean up process. Although it took several years and millions of dollars to clean up the island, the plan was a success and Granville Island officially opened as a public park in 1976. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s Granville Island went through a period of significant expansion, with more businesses, arts institutions, and cultural venues added to the island. In 2004, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) relocated its studios to Granville Island, and five years later the multi-use Granville Island Public Market was opened. Today, Granville Island is a major tourist attraction for both locals and visitors to Vancouver, with many cultural and creative activities taking place year round.
