It dates back to 1803, when the Governor of Upper Canada, Lieutenant-Governor Peter Hunter, approved an ordinance establishing a ‘public market for the Town of York’. The market has evolved over the past two centuries from a small gathering of farmers into an extensive, modern international trading centre. The original St. Lawrence Market opened in March 1803, and it quickly became an important meeting place for the townspeople. At that time, the city was still a sparsely populated town, and some of the original buildings remain intact. In 1834 the market was enlarged to double its original size to accommodate the increasing number of traders. The market went through several renovations throughout the 19th century, and in 1904 an entire city block – bounded by Jarvis, Front, King and Church Streets – was acquired from the City of Toronto for a larger market. This made the market one of the largest markets in Canada and a necessity for many everyday needs. For a brief period in 1917, the market was closed due to the Spanish Flu pandemic. However, in 1921 the original building was restored and today, the St. Lawrence Market is proudly listed as a National Historic Site of Canada.
