History:

Government House is the official residence of Saskatchewan's Lieutenant Governor, the representative of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in the Province of Saskatchewan. Government House was constructed in 1891 to house the Lieutenant-Governor of the Northwest Territories. It served as the seat of government during the period when the Territories were divided into Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in 1905 and 1906. The building underwent renovations in 1905 and also its extraordinary brick administration wing was added in 1912. The residence was designed in the Queen Anne Revival style found in many Canadian government buildings of this era. The country estate is surrounded by more than 20 hectares (50 acres) of parkland called Wascana Centre. During WWI the grounds were used by the Canadian Army's Military District One, in which an artillery park was established and later a military hospital. In 1945, Norah Michell, wife of Lieutenant Governor J.T.M. Anderson, established the tradition of a garden party for all the citizens of Regina. The event was an enormous success and has continued to be held each summer to the present day. Government House has been home to 32 lieutenant governors since 1891, including noted Canadian politician and soldier Roland Michener and NHL player turned educationalist Gerry McNeil. In 1995, the Government House in Regina was declared a Classified Federal Heritage Building. In 2016, Government House reopened after a major three-year long restoration that saw it reverted to its early 20th-century style.
