History:

The Johnson Geo Centre (previously known as the Discovery Centre) is located in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and opened its doors to the public in 2000. The centre was designed by Edward Elliott Architects Inc. and is named after Dr. Gerald Penney Johnson (1919 – 2002). Dr. Johnson had a very successful career in geology, and worked at Memorial University in St. John’s for over 30 years. He was especially known for his research on the Philpot-Barrons Lake Fault. The Johnson Geo Centre’s main focus is “rocks, fossils and the earth”. It does this through feature exhibits, interactive displays and live theatre. There are also lectures, seminars and workshops to provide a comprehensive learning experience. The centre also doubles as a museum, researching and collecting items such as fossils, minerals, crystals and geodes from around the province.
