History:

Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, located in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, commemorates the remarkable life and accomplishments of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. Bell, a noted scientist, innovator, and teacher, considered Baddeck to be his spiritual home. During the summer months from 1885 to his death in 1922, Bell, his wife Mabel Hubbard Bell and their two children, Elsie and Daisy, would stay in a cottage, named Beinn Bhreagh, overlooking Bras d'Or Lake. A long-time resident of Nova Scotia, Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847. He then moved to Ontario,Canada with his family in 1870, where he began teaching and working as a speech therapist for those with hearing disabilities. His greatest accomplishment came soon after, when he invented the telephone in 1876. This invention propelled him to international fame, and his legacy lives on to this day. In 1886, Bell established a summer estate in Baddeck, Nova Scotia, and named it Beinn Bhreagh, meaning “beautiful mountain” in Gaelic. This estate was built as an experimental research station, and here, Bell began a series of experiments with kites, aircraft, water crafts and hydrodynamics. He made a number of contributions that changed the course of engineering, aviation history, and human communication. Bell's achievements were nationally and internationally recognized and he was awarded many prestigious titles and awards. After his death in 1922, Beinn Bhreagh was sold and converted into a hotel to celebrate Bell’s life and work. In 1939, the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site was established by Parks Canada in order to recognize and preserve Bell's life and accomplishments. The site boasts a museum – the Alexander Graham Bell Museum – which holds artifacts, photographs, and various exhibits relating to Bell's life and work.
