History:

The Butchart Gardens in Brentwood Bay, British Columbia, is one of Canada's premier attractions and has been enjoyed for more than a century. The story of The Gardens began in 1904 when Robert and Jennie Butchart built a cement plant on Tod Inlet. Jennie decided to bring some beauty to the ugly ruin left behind by the cement plant and conceived the idea of creating a garden, and thus it began. In 1907, Jennie planted The Rose Garden around the quarry left behind by the cement plant. From there, Jennie and Robert continued to add gardens and features to the estate, including The Japanese Garden, The Sunken Garden, The Italian Garden, The Mediterranean Garden, The Heather Garden, The Tudor Rose Garden and The Waterloo Rose Garden. In 1951, the Butcharts donated their estate to the public and The Butchart Gardens has since become a popular destination for those wanting to take in the beauty of British Columbia. The Gardens is currently owned by the Jenkins family, who purchased the estate in 1979. Today, The Butchart Gardens features over 800 varieties of flowers, plants, and trees. It is one of the most visited attractions in British Columbia and continues to bring delight and beauty to all that visit it.
