History:

Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada, is one of the country’s oldest and largest national parks. It was first created in 1883. At the time, it was the first national park in Canada and the second in the world, pre-dating America’s Yellowstone National Park by 24 years. It was originally known as the Rocky Mountains National Park and was extended to 6,641 square kilometers in 1922 taking its present name. The region was originally inhabited by the Stoney People from the 1860s onwards and they were forced out when the park was created, and the majority of their traditional hunting grounds were brought within what is now the park’s borders. Banff National Park was also part of the Rocky Mountains Park Act of 1887, providing a much-needed framework of laws to protect wildlife and resources. These laws were an integral part of conserving resources, and forming the basis for future national parks policies. The Park’s beauty and attractions also grew over time. Tourism in the Park was facilitated by the opening of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 19th century, making it much easier for people to come to the Park. Several resort towns, including Lake Louise, Lake Louise Village, and Banff Springs, were developed during this boom in tourism. By the late 20th century, the Park had become a world-renowned tourist destination. It contains a huge array of attractions, including numerous mountains, glaciers, gorges, rivers, hot springs, hiking trails, non-motorized boating, mountain bike riding, and even skiing. It also contains hundreds of wildlife species, as well as geological formations, dinosaur fossils, and more. The Park now enjoys worldwide recognition as a premier conservation area.
