York Redoubt National Historic Site is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, on the peninsula of Nova Scotia just west of the entrance to Halifax Harbour. It was a major element of the Halifax Defence Complex, which also included two other forts, a deep-water battery, and an extensive system of fortifications. This defensive system was built in the 1790s to protect Halifax Harbour from enemy attacks, at a time when Nova Scotia and the Maritimes were seen as strategically important territories to the British Empire. The area itself has a long and storied past, having been occupied by Mi'kmaq, Acadians, and British forces since the earliest days of colonization. The Fort was initially called Coote's Redoubt and named for Sir Richard Coote, a Major-General of French and Indian Wars. The construction began in 1793 and was mostly completed in 1797, though it was damaged by a gale in the fall of 1800, forcing repairs and modifications to be made.
