The first evidence of human habitation in the area dates back to 11,000 years ago, when the first Indigenous people settled in the area now known as Waterton Lakes National Park. These first people included the Kainai, the Niitsitapi, and the Pikunni (Peigan). The first non-aboriginal settlers in the area were fur traders, beginning with fur trader Ephraim W. At the beginning of the 20th century, conservation efforts in the park began to take shape. On May 29, 1895, Waterton Lakes National Park became Canada’s fourth national park, and the first in Alberta. The park was named after Charles Waterton, an English naturalist and explorer who first visited in 1807. The designation of Waterton Lakes National Park as a World Heritage Site in 1995 came in recognition of its unique geology, history, and location at the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park.
