History:
The Magnetic Hill Zoo, located in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada, opened in 1979. It was a private endeavor owned and operated by the Car & Pet Supply store. The estimated cost of establishment was $90,000, which included purchasing land, building enclosures, and buying animals at auctions or from other zoos. When it opened, the zoo featured some rare animals like ferrets, wildcats, and miniature horses. In the early 1980s, the City of Moncton became interested in creating a public zoo and recognized the potential of the existing private zoo. The City purchased the land and enclosures already established and the Magnetic Hill Zoo officially became a municipal facility in 1985. Over the years, the zoo underwent many expansions and renovations to improve its facilities. In 1985, a group of river otters were added, and in 1992, three Bengal tigers were acquired from the Calgary Zoo. The following year, a snow leopard and three wolves were added. The city constructed a Children’s Zoo in 1998, which featured a petting zoo, penguin exhibit, and interactive playground. In 2003, the zoo was accredited by the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums and began to be featured in the tourism promotions of the City of Moncton. In 2008, the zoo celebrated its 25th anniversary and between 2009 and 2011, the City of Moncton invested over $2 Million in capital improvements. The Magnetic Hill Zoo currently features more than 450 animals, including giraffes, zebras, red pandas, penguins and a variety of primates. It is the largest zoo in Atlantic Canada and continues to be a major attraction in Moncton. Sources: "Zoo History". Magnetic Hill Zoo, www.magnetichillzoo.ca/zoo_history.html. "What's At The Zoo".
